Among the heaps, this sweet fabric has
waited a year to be made into something.
It all begins with a Winter hat that sparks the fun.

I took a red t-shirt and turned it into a dress for Freckles.
And it only took me an hour to make.

I think it turned out really cute.
What do you think?

Especially when paired with red polka dot
socks and that darling sock monkey hat!!!

I have not been here in a long time !!
So sorry if you are a follower of this blog....
I wanted to share with you a sock elephant which
I made my daughter for Christmas 2008.
I filled her with soft cotton and lavender since
I knew she would be sleeping with her...
and she loves lavender.

I tried to keep the sock elephant as vintage looking as possible.
I used vintage buttons for her eyes as well as fabric
from a blouse my daughter liked to wear.

A Vintage 30's Dress For An American Girl.....

My daughter & I went to see Kit Kitterage An American Girl from the 30's. We both loved the movie. It was sweet and touching taking you back to a sad time of the Depression. I loved the costumes. The girls dresses and the aprons the mother wore. So sweet. After the movie we went to her favorite book store The Book Worm. We found out their having a Kit American Girl Party on the 25th. Last Winter during another American Girl party she dressed up as Felicity from the Colonial period.

So.... Mama had to make her a dress for the Kit party. Here it is !!!

P.S There was a Sock Monkey in the movie when Kit's neighbors are moving a bed out of the house... it's sitting on the bed so sweet !!! I wanted to save it.

I think she is beautiful !!! She loves the dress. I will be adding an apron to the outfit and share pics. after the party !!!

My Doll Artist Friend Joee sent me this sweet print, which she painted. Since I knew her love for Lil' Red Riding Hood.. I sent her the doll I made and in return she sent me her Vintage Sock Monkey painting !!!

I love it so much !!! Thank you Joee. here is a set of some Monkey Dolls she made a while back. i would have loved to have them.. NO $$$!!!

A Love For Monkey's and Sock Monkey's Too ....

This is me when I was 5 or 6 years old. I have always loved monkey's. Why ??? Well... they are tootin' cute !!!! I have liked them for as long as I can remember. They are the ones I want to visit first when I go to the Zoo. When I was a little older I had monkeys all over my walls and stuffed monkeys of all sorts... but I never had a sock monkey.

I asked my Mom why I was deprived of a Sock Monkey. She really couldn't answer me but said well you had George. Hmmm. Some time passed, I got married had a couple kiddos and still wanted a Sock Monkey.. so my Hubby, Mr. Darling bought me my very first one for my Birthday about 5 years ago.

He is a simple guy.. but I love him and I even made a ATC ( Artist Trading Card ) out of him a few years ago.

So the collection of Sock Monkey's grew from there.. and recently made my very first sock monkey. I don't know what took me so long to make one.. I have been a doll artist for the last 13 years !!! And now I am hooked making Sock monkey's too !!!

So be sure to visit again... I will be working on some more and putting them up for adoption.

A Little History...The Sock Monkey

The genesis of the sock monkey came about when the craze of stuffed animals swept across Europe and into America, where it met the burgeoning arts and crafts movement in the USA. Mothers there took to sewing sock monkeys as toys for their children, and sock monkeys soon became a fixture of American nurseries.

The iconic sock monkeys made from Red-Heel socks emerged at the earliest in 1932, the year the Nelson Knitting Company of Rockford, Illinois added the trademarked red heel to its product. In the early years, the red heeled sock was marketed as "De-Tec-Tip". Nelson Knitting was an innovator in the mass market work sock field, creating a loom that enabled socks to be manufactured without seams in the heel. These seamless work socks were so popular that the field was soon flooded with imitators, and socks of this type were known under the generic slang term "Rockfords". Nelson Knitting added the red heel "de-tec-tip" to assure its customers they were buying "original Rockfords". This red heel gave the monkeys their distinctive mouth.
Around 1951 the knitting company discovered their socks were being used to make monkey dolls. In 1953, Nelson Knitting became involved in a dispute over the design patent on the sock monkey pattern. They were awarded the patent in 1955, and began including the pattern with every pair of socks. The sock monkey doll was then used in promotional campaigns celebrating the widespread application of their product by inventive homemakers in the field of monkey manufacturing.

In 1958, the "scrap-craft" magazine Pack-O-Fun published, "How to Make Sock Toys", a guide to making different sock animals and dolls with red heeled socks. Frequently cited as being their most popular book ever, this pamphlet went through multiple printings and was being produced in new editions up until the mid-1980s.

Fun in the Snow with My Vintage Sock monkey

I had a wonderful afternoon in the snow today. It is supposed to snow another 3" to 6'" tonight, here in the Northwest. I can't wait for my Hodgey Boy to join me. I tried making a snowman, but needed some help. I didn't get very far at all with it. The funnest thing to do in the snow is making Snow Angels. It is the ultimate favorite of mine. Have a happy day.
